Volunteer as a Face to Face Counsellor

Lifeline Hunter Central Coast offer Personal and Relationship counselling to the community so that more people can access the help they need. The service is highly reliant on the support of volunteer counsellors who generously give their time to make this service possible.

Lifeline | Counselling Training

Are you interested in gaining professional experience while making a real difference in the life of others?

We are seeking applicants to join the Lifeline Hunter Central Coast Face to Face Counselling Team. The Team is dedicated to providing quality, timely and affordable Face to Face crisis support, suicide prevention and generalist counselling.

Our experiential, practical orientation and supervision program will build on the theoretical content of counselling, psychology or social work courses you have acquired and equip you with specialist Lifeline counselling skills.

Experience in the Lifeline Counselling Team can facilitate your entry into the professions by legitimate experience, accredited placements and internships. At the same time participation in the team will allow you to provide a valuable and innovative service to the community.

To join our team you will need:

  • A strong commitment to volunteering with the Lifeline counselling team for one day per week for a minimum of two (2) years post training
  • A commitment to on going supervision and professional development


  • Eligibility for membership of a professional counselling association affiliated with PACFA (e.g. ACA)
  • Minimum of 3 years tertiary training in counselling OR
    Minimum of a 3 year degree in Psychology with electives in Counselling and Abnormal Psychology
  • ALTERNATIVELY - Minimum of a 3 year degree in Social Work with electives in Mental Health and Counselling OR
    Minimum of 1 year counselling experience or deemed equivalent, validated by references

Benefits to members of the team:

  • Initial 12 hours of experiential training with registered psychologists and experienced members of the Team
  • Participation in Lifeline's ASIST Training
  • Participation in Lifeline's Mental Health First Aid training
  • A broad spectrum of experience working with a diverse range of clients.
  • Individual and group based support, including debriefing in person and by phone
  • Working with and learning from experienced counsellors who are ready to share their knowledge through group supervision
  • Being part of a valuable team supporting people in our local community
  • Working to fill service gaps with real clients, real issues and real situations
